I don't believe there are many people in the world that make a living as a 'full time chalk letterer'. But that's exactly what the very talented Dana Tanamachi does – and good thing, too. Her work is absolutely stunning. So stunning, in fact, that the likes of Google, Adidas, and O Magazine have all had to have a piece.
Originally working as a graphic designer, Dana's fascination with hand-crafted type developed into her very specialised craft – a craft that she has noted down as being both fun and satisfying. While she's mentioned that she can get a sore back from working on blackboards all day, she's thrilled with what she does for a living.
As Dana seems to have landed her dream job, she also has some thoughtful advice for trying to find their ideal career path: "Ask yourself what you would do if nobody paid you. What makes you feel fulfilled and excited? Whatever that is, do it. Remember that your first job isn't necessarily going to be your dream job. In this age of immediate gratification, some things still just take time. So use that time wisely!" So true!

OMG this is AMAZING!
ReplyDeleteI know right? Imagine how long it would take to painstakingly chalk these beauties.
DeleteSo beautifully done, and I like that someone has done so well out of a such a specific niche!
ReplyDeleteIndeed! I read in an article that when she was asked to do the cover for O Magazine, she said she couldn't stop laughing! I can see why too; chalking on blackboards is a bit of a funny thing to be be famous for, but she's done well!
